Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the loss of bladder control, which often causes your bladder to leak urine uncontrollably.

Our urologists are specially trained to treat conditions such as urinary incontinence.

What causes urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is usually caused by issues with the muscles and nerves that help the bladder hold or pass urine. It can also come from other issues, including:

  • Weak bladder muscles
  • Overactive bladder
  • Weak pelvic floor muscles
  • Having had a hysterectomy
  • Being overweight
  • Pregnancy and childbirth
  • Menopause
Woman needing to go to the bathroom.

Symptoms of urinary incontinence

Common urinary incontinence symptoms include:

  • Leaking urine during activities, such as lifting, bending, laughing, coughing and exercising
  • Feeling strong, frequent urges to urinate
  • Urinating frequently throughout the day
  • Urinating while asleep

Minimally invasive neuromodulator surgery

West Georgia Urology's minimally invasive solution for urinary incontinence, urinary infrequency, urinary retention and bowel incontinence uses a small implant, called a neuromodulator, that manipulates the nerves in the pelvis to control these issues.

The device also helps with female pelvic pain and other pain issues. It is implanted under the skin just below the beltline near the tailbone during a minimally invasive surgery in an outpatient setting, so patients can quickly go back to regular activities.

Minimally invasive pelvic sling surgery

Urethral sling surgery is for urinary incontinence leakages that happen when you cough, laugh, sneeze, run, jump, bend over and other movements. A woman's leakage issue is solved immediately after this minimally invasive surgery, which requires only a couple of days of downtime.

When Should a Woman See a Urologist?
When Should a Woman See a Urologist?

Many people feel embarrassed when it comes to discussing their "below the belt" health with a physician. Women often believe that a primary care physician and an OB/GYN are the only healthcare providers they will ever need. These providers can address most concerns, but there are instances where seeing a urologist is more beneficial. Despite urology being commonly associated with men's healthcare, there are situations where women may also require the expertise of a urologist.
