Make Exercise Fun with ‘Pokemon Go’

The popular smartphone game “Pokemon Go” has had many west Georgians on a quest to “catch them all” since the game was released in the U.S. on July 6 this summer.

If you‘re a parent trying to get your children to spend less time on the couch and more time outside, “Pokemon Go” is one game that is actually helping kids get more physical activity. The game, which is recommended for children ages 9 and older, is a great tool for getting kids outdoors and encouraging them to explore local areas and neighborhoods. But be mindful of safety because walking while distracted can lead to injury.

Here are five tips that will help make “Pokemon Go” an enjoyable and safe activity for your children.

1. Make sure children watch where they're going.

You’ve probably seen news reports of a few players’ mishaps. There are reports of people walking into doors and trees. But these hazards can be avoided with parental supervision and if kids stay aware of their surroundings. Tell your kids to not look at their phones all the time. Make sure they’re looking around and observing traffic or other obstacles.

2. Know where your children are going.

The most popular destinations are PokeStops and Pokemon Gyms. These are often found in public or community places like churches and parks. Because of their popularity, this is where your child will most likely encounter other players. If you’re a parent with younger children, accompany them when they visit a PokeStop or Pokemon Gym to make sure it’s a safe environment. If you have older kids, encourage them to play with a group of friends and set up a pre-determined check-in time so you know they arrived safely and are enjoying themselves in a secure location.

3. Teach your children to be respectful of private property.

Teach your children that if they see a Pokemon in someone’s yard or private area, not to seek it out without the owner’s permission. Make it clear that trespassing on private property is against the law. Always be aware of your children’s activities and set limits.

4. Be prepared for weather.

Check the weather forecast to avoid severe weather. Make sure your children are dressed for the weather. Have them wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and sunscreen. Also make sure they drink plenty of water.

5. Play the game with your children.

You can use Pokemon Go to bring the family together. Turn the game into a fun, family treasure hunt around the city. Not only will your children get more physical activity, but you’ll be able to get in more steps yourself.
