Crush Your New Year’s Health Goals

New Year’s is a time to commit yourself to new, healthier habits. But do you have a plan?

Maybe you’ve already signed up for a gym membership or downloaded an app to track your food starting Jan. 1. But how will you stay on track through February?

This month-by-month plan will help you stay on track, so you won’t have to make the same resolutions over and over again.

January – Set goals that are Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic and Timely (SMART). Consider investing in yourself and hiring a personal trainer to point you in the right direction and help you get going.

February – Focus on fuel by keeping a daily log of what you eat and how you feel. If you need help finding the right balance of calories and nutrients to feel your best, Get Healthy, Live Well’s registered dietitians can help. Visit tanner.org/get-healthy-live-well/healthy-eating for more.

March – Check your progress by looking at what you’ve achieved so far and what’s missing. Change your routine to keep your body challenged if your progress has slowed or stopped.

April – Add some variety by taking your activities outdoors or signing up for a sports league.

May – Pace yourself. Don’t feel forced to fill your day with more activities than you can handle.

June – You’re halfway through the year, but are you halfway to your goals? If you’re feeling less stressed and more productive, you’re on the right track.

July – Extend your limits by going hiking or taking long walks through your neighborhood or local park. Enjoy your body’s increased energy.

August – Students are returning to class, and so can you. Get Healthy, Live Well offers diabetes, meditation, yoga, tai chi classes and more. For a complete list of classes, visit tanner.org/classes-and-events.

September – Sign up for a race or start training for a competition you never thought you’d consider entering.

October – Treat yourself to some new fitness gear. Equip yourself for a sport or exercise that challenges you in a new way.

November – Gain control over an unhealthy habit like drinking too much alcohol, shopping or using tobacco and vaping products. Willowbrooke at Tanner’s free, confidential referral service can help at 770-812-9551.

December – Take stock of how much better you feel and look, then give yourself a tangible reward for your good work. Buy a new outfit or treat yourself to a special weekend.
