When hospitals are designed with patients in mind, even the buildings can create a better healing environment.
That was the vision that local artists Gary Bannister and Angelique Jackson had when they collaborated to design the new three-story wind sculpture sitting at the heart of the new tower at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton.
Together, they developed a piece that fuses their creativity and expertise, blending abstract floral patterns and reflective surfaces to transform daylight into a shifting display of energy and peace.
“Artwork and architecture can care for both body and mind, and this project proves a hospital can feel like a place of restoration,” said Bannister.
The suspended-disc installation is built with galvanized iron and metal, weighs more than 7,500 pounds and stands approximately 40 feet above the courtyard.
Each disc can spin freely in the breeze and features floral designs with vibrant colors and reflections that pour natural light through the windows of the new tower.
“From the first sketches, we knew the goal was bigger than a sculpture,” Jackson added. “Tanner understands that patients and families need comfort as much as they need care, and we wanted this to reflect that idea about peace, nature and healing.”
Bannister is the creative director of Luminux Reflective Panels (www.luminuxpanels.com) and has more than 25 years of experience in graphic design, illustration and branding and is known for using imaginative concepts to inspire change and create beauty that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Jackson is the chief executive officer and chief creative officer of Jancik Arts International (www.jancikarts.com) and has more than four decades of experience crafting architectural art glass and art metal for hospitality and residential projects around the world.
Her career began with large-scale stained-glass and metal installations, and she continues to lead teams in cutting-edge art glass innovation and transforming public spaces through visionary art.
