Fall Into Better Health

Now that fall is here, we get to enjoy all the wonderful things that come with it: cooler weather, fall colors and foods, Halloween and Thanksgiving.

But all these fall delights also bring the challenge of sticking to your diet and exercise routines.

When it comes to food, try not to overindulge in pumpkin-spiced lattes and pies. Consider adding nutritious fall veggies like pumpkins, squash and sweet potatoes to your meal plan. They will not only satisfy your taste buds but provide you with a phytochemical important for cancer prevention: beta-carotene.

Are you planning to have trick-or-treaters knocking on your door Halloween night? Here are some quick and easy tips to help avoid scary weight gain.

  • Plan ahead. Eat healthier and exercise more to make room for the calories from candy.
  • Shop last minute and buy your least favorite candy. Shopping at the last minute will keep you from raiding the candy jar in the weeks before Halloween night.
    • Buying your least favorite candies from the store will keep you from indulging in the leftovers.
    • Buy “healthier” candy options like sugar-free gum, fruit chews or lollipops.
    • Downsize when purchasing chocolate by buying mini 3 Musketeers and Tootsie Rolls.
  • Tweak your favorite treat. Check out these recipes that will help you avoid less-nutritious food choices.
  • Take the kids trick-or-treating on foot. Go out and enjoy some exercise while logging family time.
  • Set limitations. Portion out candy to avoid consuming a bunch in one sitting.
