Every year, nearly 800,000 people in the United States experience a stroke — but here’s the hopeful truth: up to 80% of strokes are preventable.
At Tanner Health, we know the most powerful tool in preventing stroke isn’t just medicine — it’s lifestyle.
Small changes in how you live each day can protect your brain, extend your health span and empower you to live life to the fullest.
Why stroke prevention matters
A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. Without oxygen-rich blood, brain cells begin to die within minutes. That can lead to long-term disability — or even death.
While some risk factors like age, gender and family history can’t be changed, most stroke risks can be reduced or controlled. That means prevention is in your hands — and it starts with healthy living.
Healthy habits that protect your brain
Here’s how your daily routine can help reduce your risk of stroke:
1. Keep blood pressure in check.
High blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke. Regular monitoring, medication when needed and lifestyle changes — like reducing sodium, staying active and managing stress — can help maintain healthy levels.
2. Get moving.
Exercise strengthens your heart and improves circulation. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. Walking, biking, dancing — whatever gets your heart rate up and your body moving.
3. Eat well.
A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats can help lower cholesterol and maintain a healthy weight. The Mediterranean diet is a great example of brain- and heart-healthy eating.
4. Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol.
Smoking damages blood vessels and doubles your risk of stroke. Quitting is one of the best things you can do for your health. And while moderate alcohol consumption may be safe for some, too much can raise your risk.
5. Manage chronic conditions.
Conditions like diabetes and high cholesterol significantly increase stroke risk. Work with your healthcare provider to manage blood sugar and lipid levels — and stay on top of regular checkups.
Recognize stroke symptoms: B.E. F.A.S.T
Even with the healthiest habits, strokes can still happen. Acting quickly saves lives and reduces long-term damage. Know the signs, and remember the B.E. F.A.S.T. acronym:
- Balance – Sudden loss of balance or coordination
- Eyes – Sudden vision changes or trouble seeing
- Face – One side of the face drooping
- Arms – Arm weakness or numbness, especially on one side
- Speech – Slurred speech or trouble speaking
- Time – Time to call 911 immediately
Every second matters. Swift medical care can mean the difference between full recovery and permanent disability.
