Stay Safe and Enjoy Fall with These Outdoor Safety Tips

Fall is here, transforming the world with its vibrant palette of reds, oranges and yellows. While the crisp air and colorful foliage invite us outdoors, seasonal changes bring unique safety considerations. To fully enjoy everything fall has to offer, from leaf-peeping to cozy outdoor gatherings, here are essential tips to help you stay safe in the great outdoors.

Keep pathways clear for safe passage

As leaves cascade to the ground, they can create a beautiful — but potentially slippery — blanket on sidewalks, driveways and entryways. Make a habit of raking or sweeping leaves and other debris from high-traffic areas around your home. Wet, compacted leaves can become as slippery as ice, so prioritize regular clearing after rain or windy days. This practice helps prevent slips and falls and creates a more welcoming space for visitors.

Exercise extra caution on wet or leaf-covered surfaces

Fall showers, early frost, and morning dew can make outdoor surfaces slick. Wet leaves, in particular, are a major slipping hazard. Take your time and be cautious on sidewalks, stairs and outdoor steps. Use handrails whenever available and consider taking shorter strides to improve stability. If you’re heading out on a rainy day, check walkways for puddles or slick spots to avoid unexpected accidents.

Choose footwear with good traction

As temperatures cool, it's time to retire the summer shoes in favor of more supportive, weather-appropriate footwear. If you're planning fall hikes, picnics or nature walks, pack a small safety kit with essentials like a flashlight, water and a small first aid kit. Familiarize yourself with the trail or area you’re visiting and let someone know your plans if you’ll be going to a remote area. Take care around fires and outdoor heaters

Avoid loose clothing near open flames, and keep a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby, just in case.
