Prenatal Yoga: Maintaining Fitness During Pregnancy

Motherhood is transformational.

Whether you are a first-time mom or a mom of six, each pregnancy is unique and special in its own right. But this stage of life can also be very demanding on the body.

There are many ways prenatal yoga can benefit the mother through this transitional time.

Prenatal yoga is a great way to maintain fitness throughout pregnancy.

The body goes through phenomenal changes, and for some women, stress. Regular stretching and toning of target areas strengthens muscles, opens hips, and prepares the body with the stamina needed to endure long hours of labor.

Keeping up with a regular fitness routine can also help ease recovery postpartum.

Prenatal yoga helps develop mental stamina.

By focusing on your breath, you can use it to combat pain and discomfort. This tool comes in handy if the birthing experience becomes chaotic or long and grueling.

Prenatal yoga can be a grounding practice for the mother.

In our increasingly busy world, relaxation has become another item we must schedule time for if we desire to make it happen regularly, and life certainly does not slow down due to pregnancy. Practicing the ability to calm the body and mind and connect to intuition is a skill that will serve mothers well throughout motherhood, no matter the age of their children.

Lowering stress levels is beneficial for both mother and baby and sets a precedent of calm connectedness that can continue into the relationship, even after birth.

Attending a prenatal yoga class is a great opportunity for women to connect to other mothers.

Coming out of the isolation the pandemic has caused many, mothers need social support and resources now more than ever. Socializing weekly with other women that can relate to all stages of pregnancy is an invaluable by-product of this one-of-a-kind class.

Going to a prenatal yoga class gives you access to a certified instructor

Practicing prenatal yoga with the guidance of a registered instructor is the best way for the mother to tailor her practice to her specific needs throughout pregnancy.

Monitoring closely what is working and not working for her and, with the instructor's help, making modifications to accommodate any ailments or discomforts caused by pregnancy.

Though the pregnancy period may seem long and difficult at times, it is only nine months in the grand scheme of things. So dedicating time and space to cherish this experience with your baby is a unique way to bond.

Of the many physical and mental benefits, perhaps the best is the intentional, calm connectedness between mother and baby during this time spent together.
