Webinar Overview

The webinar will summarize how cognitive defusion and mindfulness-based strategies are evidence-based interventions used to address intrusive thoughts and related emotional distress.

The speaker will introduce metaphors aimed at describing how defusion, experiential acceptance and value-congruent action facilitate improved well-being and increased perceptions of control.

The audience will engage in interactive application of learned techniques with case examples related to catastrophic thinking and traumatic stress.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize research evidence supporting the value of cognitive behavioral techniques for the treatment of psychiatric disorders.
  • Describe psychoeducational tools to facilitate client awareness and identification of psychiatric symptoms.
  • Demonstrate the application of cognitive techniques (e.g., mindfulness, experiential acceptance) to assist clients in regulating intrusive thoughts.


  • 9 to 9:30 a.m. - Overview of nature and treatment of intrusive thoughts
  • 9:30 to 11 a.m. - Review of therapeutic strategies
  • 11 a.m. to noon - Application of learned techniques

About the Speaker

Mary Plisco, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist. She has been a counselor educator for 11 years. She is also director of research at her graduate institution. She received her master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Florida. She completed her internship and postdoctoral fellowship at Emory University. She has specific training in cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy.
