Webinar Overview

This webinar, suitable for both novice and experienced counselors, will address common ethical issues in professional counseling and procedures for addressing ethical dilemmas. Participants will learn about common reasons for complaints and litigation in professional counseling. Participants will apply the ACA Code of Ethics (2014), referencing the Official Code of Georgia, to resolve ethical dilemmas in counseling through the use of an ethical decision-making model. Finally, participants will learn about common risk management practices for professional counselors.


  • 9 to 10 a.m. – I.D. reasons for complaints and litigation in professional counseling
  • 10 to 10:30 a.m. – ACA code of ethics and the ability to access relevant state law
  • 10:30 to 11 a.m. – Ethical decision-making model with dilemmas
  • 11 to 11:45 a.m. – I.D. common risk-management measures for professional counselors
  • 11:45 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Questions and wrap-up

About the Speaker

Julia Whisenhunt, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, CPCS, is an associate professor of counselor education in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Speech-Language Pathology at the University of West Georgia (UWG), where she also is the director of the Ed.D. program in professional counseling and supervision. Dr. Whisenhunt is the 2021-2022 Ethics Chair for the Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia. She is trained as an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) facilitator and is a disaster mental health volunteer. Dr. Whisenhunt has instructed psychology and counseling courses since 2004. She specializes in the areas of crisis intervention and ethics, and is a co-author of Crisis Intervention Ethics Casebook, published by the American Counseling Association.
