Overview

This presentation focuses on implementing Motivational Interviewing and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in counseling. It provides an overview of the basic concepts of both approaches, explores ethical considerations in their application, and offers suggestions for working with clients from diverse backgrounds. Several case vignettes are included to illustrate a range of clinical concerns that can be addressed using these approaches.

Learning Objectives

·      Analyze the core tenets and guiding principles of Motivational Interviewing to enhance client engagement and change readiness

·      Evaluate the foundational concepts of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to promote psychological flexibility and resilience

·      Integrate the ACA Code of Ethics to effectively support the needs of diverse clients when applying Motivational Interviewing and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

·      Develop practical strategies for applying both approaches in individual and family counseling to address a range of clinical concerns

About the Speaker

Justin C. Muller, Ph.D., LMFT, is an assistant professor at LaGrange College in the clinical mental health counseling program. Dr. Muller serves as the program’s clinical coordinator, overseeing the practicum and internship experience of his graduate students. He is a licensed marriage and family therapist in Georgia and has extensive experience providing family counseling services to at-risk teens and their families. Dr. Muller earned his doctorate in counselor education and supervision from the University of South Carolina. He earned his master’s in marriage and family therapy from Valdosta State University.
