Greenspaces at Tanner

Tanner Health’s commitment to greenspace dates back to 1949, the year Tanner Memorial Hospital opened. Roy Richards, Sr., Tanner’s first board chair, handpicked the water oak trees from nearby forests, helped dig them out and oversaw their planting along Dixie Street. Those towering oaks still line the roadway today, standing as a living reminder of his vision and stewardship.

Those trees shaped more than the campus — they set the tone for a belief that access to nature supports healing, connection and community. That belief continues to guide how we design and care for greenspaces across Tanner Health.

Today, across our campuses and communities, you’ll find accessible outdoor spaces designed to reduce stress, encourage movement and support overall well-being.

Why greenspaces matter for health

Access to outdoor spaces is more than a convenience — it’s part of better health.

Spending time outside can:

  • Lower stress and anxiety
  • Support recovery and healing
  • Improve mood and overall well-being
  • Encourage physical activity

At Tanner Health, these benefits are intentionally built into the care experience across all campuses.

Support greenspaces at Tanner Health

Many of Tanner Health’s greenspaces have been created and enhanced through the generosity of donors and community partners.

  • Adams Magnolia Park, Adams Park  and Morin Park reflect philanthropic support tied to the Magnolia Ball and community giving initiatives.
  • Additional gardens and outdoor spaces across our campuses continue to grow through donor investment in healing environments.
