Rehabilitation at Tanner

A higher level of support after hospital care

Tanner’s hospital-based rehabilitation program — sometimes called “swing bed” — is for patients who are stable enough to leave acute hospital care, but who still need extra time and support before returning home.

On average, patients stay 10 to 14 days in our rehabilitation program, depending on clinical need and insurance approval.

What you can expect

Our program offers:

  • Personalized treatment and therapy plans
  • 24/7 nursing care and physician oversight
  • Physical, occupational and speech therapy
  • Comfortable, private patient rooms
  • Rehab gyms with modern equipment
  • On-site nutrition, pharmacy, radiology and lab services
  • Assistance with discharge planning and home transition

We support patients recovering from medical conditions, surgeries or illnesses that require extended therapy and recovery time — all delivered in a nurturing hospital-based setting.

A team that’s focused on you

Your care team includes:

  • Internal medicine physicians
  • Nurses and nurse practitioners
  • Physical, occupational and speech therapists
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Case managers
  • Wound care specialists

Together, they ensure your recovery is safe, smooth and supported.

Coverage and cost information

Most commercial insurance and Medicare plans cover hospital-based rehab programs like ours. Please note that Georgia and Alabama Medicaid do not cover swing bed services.

Is the rehabilitation program the right choice for me?

If a patient no longer needs intensive hospital care, their physician can determine if they are ready to step down to a less rigorous level of care. At that point, they may be admitted to the rehabilitation program.

However, our program is not a long-term solution for healthcare needs, like a nursing home. Our care team works with patients to help them live independently after leaving the hospital. Our goal is to help patients adjust to their next phase of care.

Does insurance cover my comprehensive rehabilitation care?

Our rehabilitation program is covered under Medicare and almost all commercial insurance. Our Resource and Case Management Department can verify a patient’s coverage for our program.

However, our program is not covered by the Medicaid programs administered by Georgia and Alabama.

Healthy eating doesn’t have to mean giving up your favorite meals or following strict rules. A balanced diet is about flexibility — finding the right mix of foods that fuel your body and that support your well-being while still allowing room for the flavors and traditions you enjoy.
