Stand Up to Stigma: Tanner Hosts Teen Mental Health Event

Tanner Health System hosted a free Webinar with Carroll County Schools to help educate the community on how to start the conversation about mental health.

An audience of parents, caregivers, educators and teens watched a special, web-based panel discussion titled “Stand Up to Stigma: Breaking the Silence, Changing the Conversation.” Webinar attendees learned about mental health and how to reduce the stigma surrounding it.

The event featured a question-and-answer session with a panel of behavioral health experts from Willowbrooke at Tanner and Carroll County Schools. The panelists shared facts about mental health, warning signs of mental illness and where to get help.

“One in five teens experience mental illness, so it’s important that we start the conversation early and help them understand it’s OK to ask for help,” said Heather Ford, MD, of Willowbrooke Psychiatric Center. “Events like this help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and let teens know they’re not alone.”

In addition to Dr. Ford, the other panelists included:

  • Keyunda Bailey, RN, Willowbrooke at Tanner
  • Michael Lowley, MD, Willowbrooke Psychiatric Center
  • Samantha Adams, LAPC, Willowbrooke Counseling Center
  • Jeremy Shain, LPC, Bay Springs Middle School
