Forensic Medical Services

24/7 trauma-informed care for victims of violence

The Emergency Department at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton [RF1] provides around-the-clock, specialized forensic medical services for individuals who have experienced sexual assault, domestic violence, human trafficking or other trauma. Our forensic care is delivered with compassion, privacy and respect by clinicians specially trained in both emergency medicine and forensic nursing.

Tanner Health's SANE nursesWe are proud to offer expert services by Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) who are certified to conduct forensic medical exams and provide evidence-based, trauma-informed care. Whether or not a patient chooses to report an assault to law enforcement, our team ensures their physical health and emotional well-being are prioritized.

We offer these forensic medical services:

  • Sexual assault exams by SANEs
We provide 24/7 access to certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) who conduct thorough, respectful forensic medical exams for patients age 13 and older. Exams are performed in a private, secure setting and may include injury documentation, forensic evidence collection (with consent) and preventive care, such as STI treatment and emergency contraception.

  • Domestic violence injury documentation
Our forensic nursing team is trained to assess and document injuries related to intimate partner violence, physical abuse and elder abuse. We coordinate care and connect patients to resources for protection and recovery.

  • Human trafficking response and intervention
Emergency Department staff are trained to recognize signs of human trafficking and offer discreet, trauma-sensitive support. Patients receive necessary medical treatment and assistance with safety planning, advocacy and referrals to appropriate support services.

  • Law enforcement and legal collaboration
With patient consent, our SANE team works closely with law enforcement and prosecutors to collect and preserve medical evidence. Our team is also [JAW2] [RF3] trained to testify in legal proceedings, helping to support investigations and prosecution while safeguarding patient dignity.

  • Crisis advocacy and community resources
We partner with regional advocacy organizations to provide immediate access to victim advocates, crisis counseling, shelter referrals and legal support — ensuring patients are not alone as they begin the healing process.
