After receiving five stents and undergoing cardiac rehab, he is recovering steadily and aiming to compete again, crediting a chain of timely interventions for his survival.

When Megan Helton woke up unable to feel her legs, she knew something wasn't right. For weeks, she had struggled with what she thought was a lingering stomach infection. But one morning, she tried to get out of bed and realized her legs were numb. At Tanner Medical Center Villa Rica's emergency department, an on-call neurologist and two other physicians quickly suspected Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) — a rare autoimmune disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the nerves, often triggered by an earlier illness like the stomach bug Helton experienced.

Villa Rica resident and Southwire employee Stoney Ray Cheeks, now age 45, had his first heart attack and got two stents back in 2013 when he was only 35. In 2019, another heart attack resulted in three more stents, for a total of five. So when he began having chest pain again on Jan. 25, 2023, Cheeks was open to the idea of open-heart surgery.
