Self-injury (SI) can be anxiety-provoking and intimidating to professional counselors, and, nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a potentially dangerous and complex treatment issue that can be difficult to predict and address therapeutically. Studies have demonstrated that the severity or frequency of current and overall lifetime NSSI, combined with the current and lifetime number of self-injury methods, may predict suicidal ideation. As such, it is imperative that mental health professionals are able to identify, assess and respond appropriately to suicide risk. However, clinical and ethical decision-making in the treatment of SI is rarely straightforward, thus this online webinar will address all aspects and considerations.

About the Speaker

Julia Whisenhunt, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, CPCS, is an associate professor of counselor education in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Speech-Language Pathology at the University of West Georgia (UWG). She also is the director of the Ed.D. program in professional counseling and supervision at UWG. Dr. Whisenhunt earned her master’s in psychology and Ed.S. in guidance and counseling from UWG and her Ph.D. in counselor education and practice (CACREP accredited) from Georgia State University. She is a licensed professional counselor (LPC), a national certified counselor (NCC) and a certified professional counseling supervisor (CPCS) in Georgia.
