Pediatric Sleep Study

The fully accredited Tanner Center for Sleep Disorders, along with its team of expert sleep medicine physicians, can identify the cause of your child's restless nights and guide them toward restful, rejuvenating sleep.

Quality sleep is crucial for the healthy growth and cognitive development of children and teens. Sound sleep can enhance their concentration and focus during the day, elevate their mood and bolster their immune system.

Insufficient sleep in your child or teen can lead to issues such as:

  • Difficulty paying attention

  • Hyperactivity

  • Irritability

  • Weight gain

If you suspect that they are not getting enough sleep, consult their pediatrician. They may suggest a sleep study to identify any underlying sleep problems.

What is a pediatric sleep study?

A sleep study, also known as a polysomnogram, is a diagnostic test used to identify sleep disorders. This study can be conducted in a sleep lab or at home.

A pediatric sleep study can diagnose a range of sleep disorders, including:

  • Insomnia
  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
  • Parasomnias (sleepwalking)
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Snoring

What should I expect during a sleep study?

Upon arrival, a certified sleep technologist will welcome you and your child or teen.

Before the study commences, the technician will attach small sensors to your child's head, face, chest and legs to monitor their:

  • Blood oxygen levels

  • Brain wave activity

  • Breathing

  • Heart rate

  • Leg and eye movement

  • Sleep activity and patterns

These sensors are non-invasive, will not cause any discomfort, and allow your child or teen to move freely and sleep comfortably throughout the study. The room is equipped with an audio and video monitor so the technician can observe them throughout the night. You are welcome to stay in the room with your child or teen during the study if you wish.

Specialized pediatric sleep labs are available at the Tanner Center for Sleep Disorders locations in Carrollton and Villa Rica.

What happens after the pediatric sleep study?

After the sleep study, our board-certified sleep medicine physician will provide their findings and recommendations to your referring physician. Your referring physician will follow up with you to discuss the results, potential treatment options and necessary follow-up care.

Concerned your child or teen might have a sleep disorder?

Consult with their pediatrician to determine if a sleep study at Tanner Center for Sleep Disorders is appropriate. The doctor needs to fill out a standard order form to schedule the appointment.
