Walk Your Way to Your First 5K

Were you one of the millions who made resolutions to get fit in 2017? Don’t let the cold, dark winter months or uncertainty of where to begin hold you back. One of the best ways to stay healthy and get active is an exercise that’s easy and accessible to most of us: walking.

Walking offers great health benefits. It can:

  • Help you lose weight and keep the weight off
  • Strengthen bones and muscles
  • Reduce your risk of developing chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure
  • Help you feel happier and more confident

You can meet your goals one step at a time. You don’t need to hire a fitness trainer or drag yourself to a gym. Walking can be as simple as lacing up a comfortable pair of shoes and heading out the door.

Get Started

Take your first steps with these simple tips:

  1. Set a realistic goal. Ask yourself: what do you want to accomplish with a walking program? Do you want to complete a specific distance or walk a certain number of days? Maybe it’s losing weight or working your way up to finishing a 5K, like the West Georgia Track Club Road Race. Whatever your goal is, write it down and make it your own.
  2. Make a plan. Just like walking, you’ll need to take it step-by-step to reach your goal. Set mini-goals and celebrate every victory – no matter how big or small.
  3. Check in with your doctor. Before starting a training program, it’s always smart to check in with your healthcare provider. Your doctor can help you decide if the program is right for you and, if you have certain medical conditions, give you tips for protecting yourself while exercising.
  4. Tell your friends and family. Encourage others to ask how your walking program is going. Share your goal and plans, and even consider inviting them along for a walk with you.
  5. Join a group. Join a local walking group or track club. Having a support system in place can help you stay motivated to keep up with your routine.

Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well initiative has partnered with the Bremen Parks and Rec Walkers to help residents get and stay in shape. The Bremen Parks and Rec Walkers meet Monday through Friday, as early as 8 a.m., to walk the facility’s paved, one-mile loop.
