Pedal Your Way to Better Health

We all need to find ways to work more physical activity into our daily lives. The American Heart Association recommends we get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week. One great way to reach that goal is biking. Riding a bike has proven health benefits, not to mention it’s a fun form of exercise you can enjoy with a friend or family member.

Not convinced that biking is for you? Consider these five ways you can pedal your way to better health.

  1. Get heart healthy. A 2011 study from the British Medical Association found that cyclists who bike at least 20 miles a week cut their risk of heart disease by 50 percent. Spread 20 miles across the entire week, and that goal quickly becomes achievable!
  1. Boost your brain. Physical activity, including biking, helps blood flow to the brain. In one study, participants who boosted their cardiovascular activity level by just 5 percent boosted test scores by 15 percent.
  1. Sleep better. A good night’s sleep is important for our overall health. Research has shown physical activity can help us sleep better and longer. In fact, Stanford University found that insomniacs who biked for 20-30 minutes every other day fall asleep more quickly on the days they exercised.
  1. It’s better for the environment. Biking around town, instead of driving, can help cut down on vehicle emissions. Cleaner air is easier to breathe for all of us, and helps reduce the risk of asthma attacks and other upper respiratory infections. Biking also helps reduce traffic, saves forests and helps support local businesses.
  1. Experience your town in a new way. Riding a bike can give you a new perspective on your city. Ride to the library and notice landmarks you’ve never seen before. Head to your favorite store for a quick errand and you’ll suddenly appreciate the nature that surrounds you every day in a whole new way.

Biking is even easier now with the Carrollton GreenBelt, the paved loop that connects neighborhoods, schools, parks, shopping centers, Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton and the University of West Georgia. Ride your way to better health by biking around town. See the sights of your own hometown or bike to do everyday errands instead of driving. Take advantage of the new bike-share program’s convenience and skip the need to buy a new bike. Just head to a trailhead near you, follow the instructions on the bike-share stand, and then head out for an active afternoon bike ride.
