Celebrate a Complete You This BRA Day

BRA Day may sound like the perfect day to “take off” — but for women who have undergone a mastectomy as part of their breast cancer treatment, BRA Day has a very personal meaning.

Each year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons joins other professional organizations to recognize Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day — a day of advocacy to ensure that all women understand their rights and reconstructive surgical options following breast cancer treatment.

When facing breast cancer, many women focus on survivorship and overcoming cancer. There are already so many tests, treatments and procedures along the cancer journey. When treatment is complete, breast reconstruction surgery can help restore a woman’s image and make her feel whole again.

In fact, breast reconstruction surgery is considered so vital to a woman’s recovery from breast cancer treatment that in 1998, Congress passed the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act, which mandates that all group insurance plans that cover mastectomy must also cover reconstructive breast procedures. Breast reconstruction following mastectomy is also a covered benefit under Medicare, and breast reconstruction surgery is a covered benefit even years after mastectomy.

Only 23 percent of women are aware that a host of breast reconstruction options are available to them, but with greater awareness this has improved over the last several years. Numerous options for breast reconstruction are available, such as using implants or reconstructing the breast using tissue borrowed from elsewhere in the body. A surgeon who is certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery can help women review their options and make an informed decision regarding breast reconstruction while also helping to achieve aesthetic, symmetrical results.

This BRA Day, celebrate the journey beyond cancer and take a moment to consider contacting a qualified plastic and reconstructive surgeon who can help you feel whole again.
