Causes of Chronic Diarrhea

Diarrhea is embarrassing. It’s uncomfortable and unpleasant. But when it becomes chronic it’s more than an inconvenience. Left unchecked, it can create serious health issues, including dehydration and even hospitalization. It can also keep you at home and away from the things you enjoy out of fear of an embarrassing situation out in public. That’s why it’s important to talk to your health care provider, no matter how embarrassed you may be.

Chronic Diarrhea vs Stomach Bug

Everyone has had a bout with a stomach bug. A stomach bug differs from chronic diarrhea in length: Diarrhea usually only lasts anywhere from 1-3 days, and occasionally a little longer. Chronic diarrhea is diagnosed after four weeks of daily bouts with loose or runny stools.

Common Causes of Chronic Diarrhea

Many different things can cause chronic diarrhea — from a simple infection to the more complex irritable bowel syndrome. It’s another important reason to schedule a visit with your physician so, together, you can get to the bottom of what’s causing your diarrhea.

Common causes of diarrhea include:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Infections
  • Endocrine disorders
  • Food allergies
  • Medicines

Once you know what’s causing your diarrhea, you and your doctor can create a plan to treat the issue or learn how to reduce or manage triggers. Your physician may prescribe medications, recommend a specific diet or, if necessary, refer you to a specialist for further treatment.

If you have a question about chronic diarrhea, please don’t be embarrassed. Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider. For a physician referral, call Tanner’s free, 24-hour referral line at 770.214.CARE (2273) or select “Find a Provider” at tanner.org.
