A Less-Invasive Cancer Surgery Option

While eating a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, limiting alcohol consumption and maintaining a healthy weight will help you remain healthy and reduce your chances of developing cancer, there are no guarantees. Each year, millions of people worldwide learn they have cancer and millions die from the disease — though the latter number continues to improve due to earlier detection and scientific advances in cancer treatment options.

If you are diagnosed with cancer by one of our physicians or are referred to Tanner, The Tanner Cancer Care Promise: 3 Days From Diagnosis to Treatment Optionsmeans that in just three days you’ll meet with a team of cancer care specialists who will develop a treatment plan that's right for you.

Treatment options for cancer include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy and surgery. Sometimes, surgery alone or in combination with other treatments provides your best option.

Undergoing any type of surgery can be both intimidating and overwhelming. Fortunately, there is an innovative and less-invasive surgery option for some types of cancer available at Tanner. The da Vinci Xi Surgical System allows surgeons to offer robot-assisted, minimally invasive surgical options to treat many types of cancer.

With a qualified, experienced surgeon at the controls, the advanced robotic surgical platforms at Tanner offer a number of advantages over traditional surgery, including:

  • Greater dexterity for the surgeon, allowing for a greater degree of success with even the most complicated minimally invasive surgeries
  • A high-definition, 3-D image inside the patient’s body, helping the surgeon more clearly view the healthy and cancerous tissues
  • Smaller incisions, resulting in less blood loss, less trauma and less risk of complications, such as infections
  • Shorter stays in the hospital
  • A faster, more comfortable recovery and return to daily life

The da Vinci system is powered by technology that allows the surgeon’s hand movements to be translated into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body. These movements are far more accurate than those possible with the human hand alone. The surgeon makes only a few smaller incisions, rather than the larger incisions done with traditional “open” surgery. One of the instruments used is a laparoscope — a thin tube with a lighted camera — that allows the surgeon a clear view to perform the procedure.

The da Vinci Surgical System at Tanner allows surgeons on Tanner’s medical staff to operate with superior vision, accuracy and control. We are performing robot-assisted surgery to treat prostate, gynecologic, stomach, pancreatic, liver and colon cancers. Some of the procedures that can be performed using the da Vinci Xi Surgical System include:

  • Prostatectomy (partial or complete removal of the prostate)
  • Colectomy (partial or total removal of the colon)
  • Proctocolectomy (removal of the rectum and part or all of the colon)
  • Hysterectomy (removal of all or part of the uterus and possibly other reproductive organs)
  • Myomectomy (removal of fibroids from the uterus)
  • Partial Nephrectomy (removal of a small kidney tumor)
  • Cystectomy (surgical removal of all or part of the bladder)
  • Endometrial resection
  • Gastrectomy (removal of all or part of the stomach)
