5 Benefits of Strength Training

Have you ever heard of the saying “If you don’t use it, you lose it?” Well, the same can be said for your fitness level!

Studies have shown that when you stop physical activity (also called deconditioning), your body can suffer by not being able to work as efficiently later on. Advanced exercisers can lose half of their fitness level in three months; however, beginner and new exercisers can lose all of their fitness level! This applies to both cardiovascular exercise and strength training, the latter of which gets little to no attention compared to cardiovascular exercise.

Incorporating strength training into your daily physical activity is a great way to add variety to your routine and keep your body maintained. Here are five benefits of strength training.

  1. Boost metabolism naturally — By adding muscle through strength training, your resting metabolic rate (the amount of calories you burn daily just by existing) also increases. Muscle burns more calories than fat.
  2. Improve posture — Combat hunched-over posture by strengthening the backside of the body. Proper posture leads to injury prevention and makes you feel better.
  3. Boost bones — Strength training reduces the risk of bone loss (osteoporosis) that accompanies the natural process of aging.
  4. Move better for longer — By strengthening muscles and improving bone density, people who spend time in the weight room are typically active for longer periods of time.
  5. Become a better athlete — Strength training can lead to better functional movement, explosive power, durability and, of course, greater overall strength.
