Healthy Eating Programs

Too many of our neighbors lack access to affordable, healthy foods. But Get Healthy, Live Well is changing that. We’re partnering with local communities to improve food security and ensure that fresh, local produce is available in our restaurants, stores, kitchens and schools.

Healthy Eating Programs

West Georgia Regional Food System Collaborative

Improving the health and wellness for Carroll, Haralson and Heard counties, Get Healthy, Live Well collaborates with more than 30 representatives from local organizations to remove barriers to healthy food access. Task force members support local farmers, improve nutrition in area schools and increase healthy food access at local grocers, convenience stores and restaurants. For more information, email gethealthy@tanner.org.

Food As Medicine

Our Food as Medicine program helps improve your diet, your understanding of how food affects your health and keep your blood sugar in check. The program provides education, insight — and fresh, nutritious food — for those who find getting healthy food financially challenging. Learn more about the program.

Kids 'N the Kitchen

Our mobile teaching kitchens, for grades K-8, help students improve their nutritional IQ by learning cooking fundamentals. The program also helps kids understand how to read food labels, identify hidden sugars and prepare healthy meals. For more information, email gethealthy@tanner.org.

Farmers’ Markets

Eating local is a healthy choice that supports our region’s sustainable farms and businesses. Visit farmers' markets to find locally grown fruits, vegetables and other local foods. Click here to learn about what is in season and where to find west Georgia and east Alabama farmers’ markets.

Cotton Mill Farmers’ Market – open Saturdays – is located at 609 Dixie Street in Carrollton. Vendors offer locally grown and made foods, produce and products. The market accepts EBT/SNAP benefits and doubles their value. For more information, visit cottonmillfarmersmarket.org.

Journeyman Farmer Certification Small Fruit and Vegetable Program

To increase the supply of fresh fruits and vegetables needed for healthy communities, Get Healthy, Live Well — in partnership with the Carroll County University of Georgia Extension Office — is supporting new farmers through the Journeyman Farmer Certification Small Fruit and Vegetable Program. Weekly workshops cover topics on small-farm business planning and small fruit and vegetable production. The application period is once a year. For more information, email gethealthy@tanner.org.

Community Gardens

Community Get Healthy, Live Well is improving access to nutritious local produce by helping cultivate community gardens. Re-purposing vacant lots and unused public spaces, the gardens provide residents with seasonal fruits and vegetables harvested at the peak of freshness. Participants who tend the gardens also enjoy increased physical activity. For more information, email gethealthy@tanner.org.

Go for 5 Challenge
