Sleep Study

A sleep study is a test used to diagnose sleep disorders. Sleep studies are usually performed in a sleep lab, but they can also be done at home.

If you are suffering from a sleep disorder, a sleep study is the first step to a better night’s sleep.

A sleep study can identify the root causes of what may be disrupting your sleep, including sleep disorders and conditions such as:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Insomnia
  • Narcolepsy
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • REM sleep behavior disorder
  • Parasomnia
  • Circadian rhythm disorders

What happens during a sleep study?

During a sleep study, our specialists attach several small electronic sensors to you to monitor your sleep activity and sleep patterns, brain wave activity, breathing, heart rate, blood oxygen levels and leg and eye movement.

The room is equipped with video and audio monitoring so the sleep technologist can monitor and communicate with you during the night.

The sleep rooms at Tanner Center for Sleep Disorders provide comfortable amenities, including:

  • Private rooms
  • Electric adjustable beds
  • Cable television
  • Beverages
  • Private bathrooms

Home sleep study

A home sleep study is a simple test that you complete at home. It is primarily used to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea, a breathing-related sleep disorder. We provide you with an easy-to-use breathing monitor — called a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine — that you wear while you sleep that records your breathing patterns.

Preparing for your sleep study

If you have been ordered a sleep study, you will receive a list of instructions to help you prepare. Report to your appointment at the scheduled time for registration and orientation. Please dress comfortably in two-piece bed clothes or pajamas.

Your sleep study results

After your sleep study, a sleep specialist will read the results of your study with you and discuss follow-up care — that includes a sleep therapy plan — to get you back to your best night's sleep.

Scheduling a sleep study

To schedule a sleep study, speak with your doctor about receiving a referral for a sleep study at the Tanner Center for Sleep Disorders. To schedule your session, your physician will need to complete a standard Tanner order form. For more information, call 770-812-9146.
