Recognizing Zika Symptoms

Most people infected with the Zika virus have no symptoms. For the 1 out of 5 people who do have symptoms, they are usually very mild. They last five to seven days and then go away completely. They may include:

  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Headache
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Conjunctivitis, when the eyes become red, irritated and inflamed

Zika may be contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito or through sexual activity with an infected person. Because only 1 out of every 5 people infected with the virus have symptoms — and because an infected person can transmit the infection before, during and after they experience symptoms — an infected person can spread the virus without being aware.

You should see your healthcare provider if you have these symptoms and have visited an area with Zika — especially if you are pregnant. Be sure to tell your medical provider where you traveled.

You can learn more about Zika symptoms from the CDC.
