Your Guide to Buying Safe, Age-Appropriate Toys

Christmas is right around the corner and children everywhere are already hard at work on their long lists of toys and gifts. Whether its tech-savvy or something simple, buying safe, age-appropriate toys can become a difficult task if you aren’t sure what to look for.

With all of the newest and latest toys on every child’s Christmas list this holiday season, safety and age play a vital role. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were more than 251,000 toy-related injuries from 2010-2014 for children 15 years and younger.

But not to worry, choosing safe, age-appropriate toys doesn’t have to be difficult with these helpful tips:

Check safety review sites for helpful information and possible toy recalls, including:

Check the warning labels

  • Every toy should contain some type of warning label providing helpful information as a guide in buying safe toys.
  • Look for the age recommendation on the toy’s label, such as, “Not recommended for children under 5.”
  • Also look for any other safety labels, such as flammability, high lead levels or choking hazards.

Make safety a priority

  • Purchase the recommended safety equipment that comes with each toy. For example, always purchase a helmet with a bicycle.
  • Check toys frequently to minimize any potential hazards and immediately discard any broken or damaged toys.
  • Keep the size of the toy in mind for specific ages. If the toy is too small or too big, it can be dangerous to the child.

Keep it simple

  • Always keep in mind the child’s skill level, awareness and overall interest.
  • Consider fun yet educational toys, such as building blocks or storybooks.
  • Remember, not every toy is suited for every child. Do some research online and read product reviews before heading into the store to make a purchase.

Taking the appropriate steps in examining a toy before making a purchase provides a major difference in the way children learn, think and process new information. Picking out the perfect holiday gift shouldn’t be stressful, so long as the gifts are safe.
