Tanner Cancer Care Promise: The Power of FAST

June 4 is the 30th annual National Cancer Survivors Day, a “celebration of life” held annually on the first Sunday in June to honor the lives of cancer survivors — those living with a history of cancer — from the moment of diagnosis through treatment and beyond.

Thanks to better education about cancer prevention — as well as advances in early detection, treatment and follow-up care — more people than ever are fighting and surviving cancer.

However, for those who are facing a new diagnosis of cancer, answers and help can’t come fast enough to help alleviate those very real feelings of fear, worry and even anger. Time becomes both an enemy and a precious resource to the newly diagnosed.

At Tanner Cancer Care, newly diagnosed cancer patients get answers and hope fast — in just three days. That’s the Tanner Cancer Care Promise: 3 Days From Diagnosis to Treatment Options.

How the Promise Works

Upon receiving a physician’s referral, cancer specialists on staff at Tanner begin planning the best possible approach to defeating the patient’s particular type of cancer. An oncologist — a physician who specializes in fighting cancer — reviews the referral, plans an approach to care that employs all of the most advanced, proven techniques and treatments, evaluates clinical trials for which a patient may be eligible and more, putting together a comprehensive plan to help the patient beat cancer.

The oncologist will then pass his or her notes to a patient navigator. Patient navigators provide a single point of contact to answer questions or address concerns about cancer treatment. The patient navigator will assist in explaining diagnoses and physician orders, answering questions about cost and reimbursement, arranging access to community and health system resources, scheduling appointments and more.

A patient navigator will contact each newly diagnosed patient referred to Tanner Cancer Care for an initial treatment plan session and then begin scheduling all the necessary appointments and any additional diagnostics needed by the oncologists or surgeons.

Fast Means Three Days

We know that for newly diagnosed patients, answers can’t come fast enough. Our 3-Day Promise includes weekends and holidays. A newly diagnosed cancer patient referred to Tanner Cancer Care on a Friday will have their treatment options by Monday, and may even be able to discuss their treatment options on a Saturday or Sunday.

There is no charge for the Tanner Cancer Care Promise. That’s just our commitment to our newly diagnosed patients and their families.
