Take the Steps to Relieve COPD

For people who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), every step can seem like a struggle. But taking those steps is key to staying healthy and out of the hospital. Research has shown that individuals with COPD who are physically active have fewer flare-ups and fewer trips to the hospital.

Take the first steps to physical activity. If starting an exercise program seems overwhelming or unlikely, break it down into five simple steps.

Step 1: Talk to your doctor.

It’s essential you work with your doctor to develop a plan for starting and monitoring physical activity. Often, the type and severity of your COPD will determine what physical activity you can do safely.

For individuals with mild COPD, walking or swimming is generally a safe and effective option. Talk to your primary care provider or pulmonary medicine specialist about safely starting an exercise plan.

Step 2: Believe in the benefits

Getting active takes hard work and commitment. But, its benefits far exceed the extra effort. Physical activity can help you:

  • Experience fewer flare-ups
  • Lose weight
  • Lower your heart rate and help your lungs work more efficiently

Step 3: Set a goal

Make a goal — big or small — to help keep you motivated and focused as you start your journey to physical activity. It can be as simple as walking to the sidewalk, and then progressing to one house down, then two houses down, until you can make it around the block. Just be sure you work closely with your physician to set goals and create a program that’s safe for you.

Step 4: Create a support system

Tell your family and friends about your exercise goals and encourage them to check in on your progress. Invite someone to walk with you — it can be a great way to spend time with a loved one or friend.

Step 5: Have fun

Find an activity you like and make the time spent working out and getting active fun. When you can look forward to your next walk or trip to the community swimming pool, you’ll be more likely to exercise and enjoy all its health benefits.
