Let’s face it: With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, you can't turn your head without gazing upon a box of chocolates or other sweet treats this month. And let's not talk about that Valentine's Day tradition: the rich, heavy restaurant meal, complete with decadent dessert (yum)!
Don't panic — you can feel the love without feeling the weight gain! All it takes is a little planning.
If you are eating out, most restaurants post their menus online. Check it out ahead of time to see if they have any healthy options. If not, why not share a meal and dessert with your Valentine this year? That way, you will still get to enjoy a special treat without overindulging.
If you are eating at home, look online to see how to prepare a healthier version of your meal. This is a great way to take a favorite meal and make it healthier not only for Valentine’s Day, but for any other night you might like something special. The same would be true for dessert. There are several healthier dessert recipes that are lower in fat and calories.
For some couples, dinner and a movie are on the agenda. Why not switch it up with roller skating, ice skating or dancing? These are fun activities that will burn off extra calories from that wonderful meal.
If you are single, don’t sit home with a pint of ice cream all evening: plan an outing with friends that does not focus on food. Or, if you are alone for Valentine’s Day, then plan to do something just for you. Some ideas could include shopping, getting a manicure or better yet, a massage. Plan a special treat that focuses only on you for that evening. Focus on fun and not food!
Preplanning can be very helpful with holidays. Plan to get more physical activity before and after Valentine’s Day if you are planning on enjoying an indulgent meal. Make time for physical activity earlier that day if possible. Small changes can really help to keep you on track.
Remember, a special day or event does not always have to focus on food. Switch it up and enjoy a fun experience instead with your loved one.
