Fun Summer Activities to Keep Kids Moving

Summer will be here before we know it. That means sunny days, hot weather and kids out of school. What that shouldn’t mean is kids lounging on the couch, watching TV and playing video games all day. Spend some time planning fun summer activities before the final bell rings to keep kids moving all summer long.

Here are just a few easy ways to plan a fun, healthy summer.

1. Plan some fun outdoor games.

There’s no better time to be outside than summer. Look for low-prep, fun outdoor games now so you’ll be ready the next time your kids complain they’re bored.

  • Relay races are a great way to get kids moving. Gather the neighborhood kids and set up a course in the backyard. Play a couple of rounds, then switch things up with a longer course, different teams or new instructions for a great workout kids won’t even recognize as exercise.
  • Catch lightening bugs. Kids always love to be outside when the sun goes down. Grab a few mason jars and let kids loose. The running around is a great way to raise their heart rates and wear them out before bedtime.
  • Head to the pool. Swimming is a fantastic whole body workout — and what kid doesn’t love the pool? Slather on the sunscreen and let them swim as they please or play games like Marco Polo, shark races or find diving sticks.

2. Explore your city.

What better time to explore the city than when the kids are out of school? Check out the places you’ve always wanted to visit, but haven’t had a chance. Here are a few great ways to explore the city:

3. Beat the summer heat with indoor fun.

Some days, it’s just too hot to head outdoors. Keep kids off the couch with some fun inside games.

  • Make an indoor obstacle course. Make use of what you already have: couch cushions on the floor to jump on or over, painters’ tape for a homemade balance beam and make a tunnel with some chairs and a blanket for a fun day kids won’t forget!
  • Try out yoga. Yoga is a great, low-key activity for kids to calm down and relax with exercise. All ages can take part in yoga, too. Check out Pinterest for some fun poses that even toddlers can do at home. Take older kids to the local yoga studio for a new experience you can do together.
  • Have a dance party. Crank up the radio and let kids cut a rug to some music. Play games like the hokey pokey, musical chairs or just let kids show off their moves with a dance-off.
