Easier Hernia Surgery With a Faster Recovery

A hernia is the bulge of an organ or tissue through the abdominal wall. Most hernias occur when a piece of intestine slips through a weakness in the abdominal wall, creating a lump you can see and feel. Hernias can develop around the navel, in the groin or any place where you may have had a surgical incision. Most hernias are abdominal hernias, meaning they happen in the belly and groin areas.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, more than 5 million Americans currently suffer from hernias. With more than 200,000 cases occurring in the United States every year, it is important to understand your treatment options.

There are two types of surgery that can be done to repair a hernia: open and laparoscopic. An open surgery requires one large incision at the hernia site, near the bulging area. An open surgery is much more invasive and requires a longer recovery time. A laparoscopic, or minimally-invasive, surgery requires two to four smaller incisions, so that small instruments and a camera may be inserted — offering a much less invasive approach.

The newest form of laparoscopic surgery is called laparoscopic robotic-assisted surgery. At Tanner, this involves the use of the da Vinci Xi surgical system — technology that allows the surgeon’s hand movements to be converted into smaller, defined movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body. One of the instruments is a laparoscope — a thin tube with a small lighted camera at the end. The camera sends images to a video monitor in the operating room to guide doctors during surgery. The surgeon is in control of the da Vinci System at all times.

Robotic surgery offers many benefits to patients compared to traditional open and laparoscopic surgery, including:

  • Shorter hospitalization
  • Reduced pain and discomfort
  • Faster recovery time and return to normal activities
  • Four to six smaller incisions, resulting in reduced risk of infection
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Minimal scarring

Other laparoscopic robot-assisted surgeries available at Tanner include: cholecystectomy (removal of gall bladder), appendectomy (removal of appendix), colectomy (total or partial removal of colon) and hysterectomy (partial or total removal of the uterus).
