Summer is here, and with it comes many opportunities to head outside with your family. But while we all know we should take advantage of the warm weather — and the fun events happening all over west Georgia — it’s sometimes easier said than done. Breaking away from busy work schedules, video games and technology can be hard.
In honor of Great Outdoors Month, let’s resolve to be more intentional. Here are seven simple ways to enjoy the outside.
1. Go fishing
Grab a pole and tackle box, and try something new with the kids. Find places to fish and where to get supplies online at takemefishing.org. Certain restrictions and other regulations may apply, so be sure to contact your state fish and wildlife agency.
2. Go for a hike
Explore nature on one of the many trails in our area. Pack a picnic and pile in the car.
3. Take a bike ride
Biking is a great way to get exercise, enjoy the outdoors and spend time together. The Carrollton GreenBelt is an 18-mile loop that offers a safe and active way to see the area. Bring your own bike or use one from Zagster bike share stations scattered along the loop.
4. Find a new park
Families of all ages can enjoy our local parks. Explore the region and find parks with fun features, from playgrounds to picnic shelters, walking trails or hiking paths. It’s a fun and free activity to get outside and get active.
5. Try camping
Borrow a tent and head out for a night under the stars. Many of our state parks offer great campgrounds with convenient amenities, including showers, swimming pools and power hook-up. Have a family meeting to plan the trip and make reservations at a campsite that looks like fun for everyone. You could also consider a camp-out right in your own backyard. It can make for a fun night of adventure that’s a little closer to home.
6. Do some good outdoors
Spend time outside as you volunteer with organizations that are improving our communities and health. Help pick up trash, spend time in a community garden or volunteer with a local Habitat for Humanity.
7. Sign up for a 5k
Sometimes a goal like competing in a 5K can bring a family together. Find an upcoming race that raises money for a good cause, and work on a training plan so you can go the distance. Nightly or weekly walks or runs (and other fun activities) can get everyone ready for race day. When the big day comes, you’ll be ready to cheer each other on and reach your own health and wellness goals together.
Look for fun
Whatever you do this summer, look for fun activities that get your family active and outdoors. Take a walk around the block, head to a nearby pool and just enjoy the long, hot days of summer before the hectic school year begins again.
