5 Reasons to Love the Treadmill This Winter

It’s cold outside, but that doesn’t mean you have to skip your running or walking workout. Just hop on a treadmill. While pounding the pavement in the fresh air, surrounded by beautiful scenery and the calming sounds of nature is a great motivator, working out on the treadmill also has its perks.

Here are five reasons to love the treadmill this winter. Don’t have a treadmill? You can also reap the benefits of an indoor work on a ski machine, stair climber or stationary bike.

Avoid Braving the Elements
If you’re planning to skip a run or walk because of inclement weather, channel your inner postman — neither rain, sleet, snow or dark of night stop you from working out. Taking to the treadmill is a great way to stick to your fitness routine no matter what the weather forecast is for the day or night. To get the most out of your workout, try not to hold onto the treadmill while walking.

Do Less Laundry
Other than battling the bitter cold, another drawback to running or walking outside in the winter is the extra laundry. To fight the colder temperatures and the wind that often comes along with it, it’s recommended you bundle up in layers of clothing. That may mean putting on up to two moisture-wicking shirts, an insulating fleece or wool shirt and heat-capturing tights. And don’t forget outerwear like a jacket, hat, gloves, ear muffs or neck warmer. Treadmills are typically in temperature-controlled spaces so you can work out comfortably in shorts and a T-shirt.

Prevent Injuries
When it comes to running outside, it’s called “pounding the pavement” for a reason. The further and faster you go on the pavement or road increases the chances of injury. Running on a cushioned treadmill is easier on your knees and joints, reducing your risk of injury. Treadmills are also flat and eliminate the risk of tripping on a pothole or rock on the road or trail.

Protect Your Heart
I mentioned the benefits of running or walking outside in the fresh air, but that’s not always a given. If you’re logging some of your miles in high-traffic areas, traffic-related air pollution can seriously harm your heart, according to researchers from The University of California, Irvine. They found that air pollution generated by vehicle congestion caused high blood pressure and inflamed arteries, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Working out indoors on the treadmill not only protects you from the smog, but other traffic dangers that may arise due to negligent drivers.

Run With Friends
The treadmill doesn’t have to be the “dread-mill.” Invite your friends to join you at the gym for a run or walk. You are more likely to enjoy your workout if you have a friend to chat with along the way.
