Robot-assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery

The skill of a surgeon; the precision of a robot.

Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton's surgical suites are home to two robotic surgery systems by Intuitive Surgical: the da Vinci Xi (pictured at right) and the da Vinci Si (pictured in use below).

By turning a specially trained surgeon’s slightest hand movements into precise movements of tiny instruments, the da Vinci Surgical System enables the surgeon to perform complex surgeries through a few tiny incisions. The system also provides the surgeon with miniature wristed instruments, a magnified view and high-definition 3-D vision while seated at the da Vinci controls.

The da Vinci Surgical System cannot be programmed to make decisions on its own. Instead, it is precisely controlled by the surgeon who uses the da Vinci robotic platform to perform minimally invasive surgery.

The da Vinci Surgical System provides a natural extension of the surgeon’s eyes and hands through small incisions into the patient. The system's Endowrist instruments bend and rotate beyond the capabilities of the human hand, and the system's Intuitive Motion technology allows a surgeon to operate with steady, natural motion that is directly controlled by the surgeon.

The system's 3D HD Vision ensures that a surgeon can view the surgical site with true depth perception and crystal-clear vision; it is equipped with a high-definition, 3D endoscope (flexible tube with a camera and light at the tip) and image processing equipment that provides true-to-life images of the patient's anatomy. A patient is positioned in the patient-side cart during surgery. The system's robotic arms can be placed at any position around the patient, allowing for three-quadrant (Si) or four-quadrant (Xi) access.

Robotic-assisted Surgical Procedures

At Tanner, robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery is used for a wide variety of colorectal procedures, general surgery, gynecologic procedures, head and neck procedures, hernia repair, thoracic (chest) procedures and urological procedures, including:

  • Bronchoscopy
  • Colorectal surgery
  • Cystectomy
  • Cystoscopy with stent insertion
  • Cystoscopy/transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)
  • D&C (Dilation and Curettage) with/without hysteroscopy
  • Esophagogastric surgery
  • Knee arthroscopy
  • Laparoscopic appendectomy
  • Laparoscopic gall bladder surgery (cholecystectomy)
  • Laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy
  • Partial nephrectomy
  • Pyeloplasty
  • Prostatectomy
  • Removal of fibroids (myomectomy)
  • Thoracoscopy
  • Total vaginal hysterectomy (TVH)
  • Ureteroscopy (with cystoscopy), stone extraction

Robot-assisted Surgery Benefits

The da Vinci Xi and the da Vinci Si HD surgical systems allow Tanner surgeons to perform a wide range of advanced, minimally invasive surgeries through a few small incisions. The benefits of robot-assisted surgery include:

  • Enhanced precision and control for the surgeon
  • Faster recovery
  • Fewer complications
  • Less blood loss
  • Less injury to tissue
  • Less risk of infection
  • Minimal scarring
  • Reduced pain
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Smaller incisions
