Visitor Restriction Policy

Keeping Patients and the Community Safe This Flu Season

To protect patients, visitors, staff and the community at large, Tanner Health System is imposing new restrictions on visitors to its inpatient units for the 2018-2019 flu season.

The health system is asking the public to refrain from visiting a Tanner patient if:

  • You are not an immediate family member and/or significant other.
  • You are age 13 or younger.
  • You have any flu-like symptoms, including a cough, fever, sore throat, nasal or respiratory congestion or other such symptoms.

The policy applies to all Tanner’s inpatient facilities, including Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton, Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica, Higgins General Hospital in Bremen, Tanner Medical Center/East Alabama and the inpatient behavioral health facility Willowbrooke at Tanner in Villa Rica.

The 2018-2019 flu season is hitting Georgia and Alabama especially hard. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of Dec. 31,  Alabama and Georgia were the only states in the Southeast reporting widespread flu activity. California, Massachusetts, New York and the territory of Guam are also experiencing widespread flu activity.

The measures at Tanner are intended to:

  • Protect patients from exposure to visitors who might have flu; and
  • Prevent visitors from transporting the flu virus from the hospital into the community.

The decision to impose the visitor policy was made in consultation with organizational leadership and medical staff, including the health system’s infectious disease specialists and infection prevention team. A number of other hospitals throughout Georgia and Alabama have also implemented visitor restriction policies.

Flu symptoms may include:

  • Cough, often becoming severe
  • Extreme exhaustion
  • Fatigue for several weeks
  • Headache
  • High fever
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Severe aches and pains
  • Sneezing at times
  • Sometimes a sore throat
  • Vomiting and diarrhea
