After Your Surgery

What Happens After Your Surgical Procedure

  • The physician will meet with your family.
  • You will receive a room assignment if you are not an outpatient.
  • You will be in the recovery phase of care for 30 minutes to one hour.
  • You will have an IV and possibly other tubes for clinical purposes.
  • Please tell your nurse if you have pain or nausea.
  • Your throat may be sore if you were put to sleep.
  • Your mouth may feel dry.

Going home after outpatient surgery

  • Plan for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for 24 hours. You should not make important life decisions during this time.
  • Your discharge will be planned according to your doctor’s orders.
  • A nurse will provide you with detailed instructions regarding your care.
  • Be sure all your questions are answered by the nurse or doctor before you go home.
  • A nurse will phone to check on you after you go home.

Follow the instructions your surgeon provides about diet, rest, and medications following surgery. If you have any complications following your surgery, you should contact your surgeon or report to the emergency department.
