Free Diabetes Prevention Classes Starting Soon

Lower your odds for diabetes by taking a free class offered by Tanner Health System’s Get Healthy, Live Well.

If you’re at risk for type 2 diabetes, Get Healthy, Live Well’s Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) can help you beat the odds.

Since 2014, DPP has helped more than 400 participants slash their risk for developing type 2 diabetes by 58%.

The lifestyle change program was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help people cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half. Participants, many of whom are pre-diabetic or at high risk for developing diabetes, strive to lose 7% of their body weight and get 150 minutes of physical activity a week.

DPP focuses on eating a healthier diet by reducing fat and calories and keeping a food journal. The classes offer strategies for getting more physical activity.

The small-group setting also provides support and motivation. Classes meet for one hour each week for 16 weeks, followed by monthly maintenance classes for the remainder of the year.

With more than 75 community-trained volunteers, Tanner was the first hospital in Georgia to receive full recognition by the CDC for participant achievement of DPP program goals. The health system continues to hold this status after receiving an average of 5.5% participant weight loss at the end of the yearlong program.

Space is limited, and registration is required, so call 770-214-CARE or register online at tanner.org/dpp.
