Ready to Ride?

Bike share encourages residents to become more physically active.

Riding a bicycle has many health benefits. Now, it’s even easier for area residents to start cycling with the launch of a new bike-share program in Carrollton.

Tanner Health System, Southwire, the University of West Georgia and the city of Carrollton joined the Friends of the Carrollton GreenBelt to bring the national bike-sharing company Zagster to west Georgia.  The bikes are available for rent at several stations around the city, encouraging more people to put their foot to the pedal and become more physically active.

Riders must be 18 or older to join the program and can sign up for hourly, monthly or annual passes. For monthly and annual members, rides are free for the first hour, then $3 per hour after that. Each bike-share station is sponsored by one of the partnering organizations.

Tanner and Get Healthy, Live Well are sponsoring half of the 10 stations installed around town. The health system has maintained a longstanding commitment to advance the community’s health — including encouraging residents to become more physically active. Get Healthy, Live Well sees the bike-share program as a way to help increase physical activity while providing a fun way for people to get around town.

Tanner’s stations are located at several Carrollton GreenBelt trailheads, including Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton, Hays Mill Park, Lakeshore Park, Courthouse Park and Hobbs Farm Park.

Why Bike?

Biking is an excellent way to get more physical activity because it provides a good workout with less strain on the joints than jogging. It is also a good alternative to running or jogging for people with osteoarthritis.

Biking strengthens the large muscles of the lower body. When you climb hills, your upper body gets a workout, too.

Along with the health benefits, bike share provides a more convenient way to get around. For people who don’t own a bike, the program opens up a new opportunity to go bicycling.

Bike share benefits bike owners too. A bike-share membership helps reduce wear and tear on personal bikes. It also saves time and money spent on upkeep and repairs.

Bike owners will also have the opportunity to explore the GreenBelt without having to worry about securing their bikes on a bike rack for their motor vehicles then unloading it.
