What is Truven Health Analytics?

Truven Health Analytics, an IBM Company, is a provider of healthcare data and analytics solutions and is popular for its annual 100 Top Hospitals list. This is the eighth year Truven has released its 15 Top Health Systems report. Formerly known as Thomson Reuters, Truven Health Analytics delivers unbiased information, analytic tools, benchmarks and services to the healthcare industry. Hospitals, government agencies, employers, health plans, clinicians, pharmaceutical firms and medical device companies have relied on Truven for more than 30 years.

What is the Truven Health Analytics 15 Top Health Systems study?

Truven Health Analytics annually conducts objective, quantitative research that serves as the foundation of a national balanced scorecard of health system performance. That scorecard, published annually in the Truven Health 15 Top Health Systems study, provides critical benchmarks for health system boards and executives across the United States.

To maintain the study’s high level of integrity, only public data sources are used for calculating study metrics. This eliminates bias, ensures inclusion of as many health systems as possible and facilitates consistency of definitions and data. Health systems do not apply, and winners do not pay to market this honor.

Outperforming their peers in a number of ways, the winners of the 15 Top Health Systems award:

  • Saved more lives and caused fewer patient complications
  • Followed industry-recommended standards of care more closely
  • Made fewer patient safety errors
  • Released patients half a day sooner
  • Scored better on overall patient satisfaction

The 2016 Study

All U.S. health systems with two or more short-term, general, nonfederal hospitals; cardiac, orthopedic and women’s hospitals; and critical-access hospitals were assessed in Truven’s 2016 study.

The 15 Top Health Systems study for 2016 evaluated 338 health systems and 2,912 member hospitals to identify the 15 U.S. health systems with the highest overall achievement on a balanced scorecard. The scorecard is based on Truven’s 100 Top Hospitals national balanced scorecard methodologies and focuses on five performance domains: inpatient outcomes, process of care, extended outcomes, efficiency and patient experience. The study relied on public data from the 2013 and 2014 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, CMS Hospital Compare datasets and 2014 Medicare cost reports.

Compared to non-winning health systems, Tanner and the other 14 top performing health systems:

  • Had complication rates that were 15.1 percent lower
  • Achieved 14.7 percent lower mortality rates
  • Offered emergency department wait times that were 12.3 percent lower
  • Spent 5 percent less per care episode
  • Discharged patients from the hospital a half-day sooner
  • Attained average Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores that were 7 percentage points higher
