Cancer Care

Donations to the Cancer Care Fund support cancer treatment at the Roy Richards, Sr. Cancer Center in Carrollton, where the latest technology is utilized in treating cancer patients in our community.

For example, the cancer center is adding a second linear accelerator for radiation therapy that will increase the capacity from 25 patients per day to 50 patients per day. The new machine will bring new RapidArc technology, a quicker and more accurate radiation technology to the hospital. The only two other hospitals in the Southeast that have this technology include Emory in Atlanta and UAB in Birmingham. Past donations to the Cancer Care Fund have been used to purchase a Hi-Speed computed-tomography CT Simulator, a Portal Vision, and a Multi-leaf Collimator. This equipment purchase, along with an upgraded 3-D treatment planning system, allowed the staff of the Roy Richards, Sr. Cancer Center to begin performing Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy Treatments (IMRT), a state-of-the-art cancer treatment method that combines computer technology and radiation therapy to precisely deliver lethal doses of radiation to tumors while sparing nearby healthy tissue. Through the use of the CT scanner and special treatment simulation software, the exact location of the tumor is determined and an individual digital 3-D treatment plan is designed for the patient.

As a result of the generosity of donors to this fund, the Roy Richards, Sr. Cancer Center continues to be on the leading edge in the provision of state-of-the-art cancer treatment. Rather than traveling out of the west
