Tanner Connections Kicks Off Second Year

The Carroll County Schools and Tanner Health System have kicked off the second year of Tanner Connections, an initiative to give area high school students a look inside health care and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

Thirteen College and Career Academy students from Carroll County Schools will be participating in the first semester of the program this year, with more students anticipated to join the program for the second semester. Last year—the inaugural year of the program—began with eight students and grew to almost 20 students by the end of the academic year.

“Last year’s program was a huge success, and this year’s group of students will be a part of continuing our mission at Tanner to improve the health of our communities,” said Loy Howard, president and CEO of Tanner Health System. “Not only will these students learn about the importance of avoiding long-term health problems by adopting a healthy lifestyle, they’ll also see inside the healthcare field and learn about how they can pursue careers that will provide care for our region in the years to come.”

Students will participate in educational “pathways” in areas throughout the health system, including information technology, culinary arts, climate control and engineering, marketing and graphic design. Additional areas may be added in the school year’s second semester.

“The Tanner Connections Program is a powerful example of how partnerships with the private sector can multiply student learning opportunities and give them real world experiences that will help them succeed when they leave high school,” said Scott Cowart, superintendent of Carroll County Schools. “We are lucky in Carroll County to have private sector organizations like Tanner Health Systems who are willing to make a commitment to helping us prepare students for successful careers and a healthy lifestyle.”

Tanner Connections students attended an orientation on Friday, Aug. 17, covering subjects from health system policies and procedures to how to submit paperwork necessary for a grade. The students will be completing their unpaid internships through Tanner Connections at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton and Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica.

The 24th largest school system in Georgia, Carroll County Schools is home to approximately 14,400 students who attend one of 23 schools in the county system.
