Shannon Couvreur, DO, Joins Carrollton Obstetrics and Gynecology, Tanner’s Medical Staff

Shannon Couvreur, DO, has joined the patient care team at Carrollton Obstetrics and Gynecology and the medical staff of Tanner Health System. Carrollton Obstetrics and Gynecology is the practice of Daniel Nelson, MD; Christopher Jewell, MD; Kristy Nix, MD; and James Rash, MD.

Dr. Couvreur, who initially wanted to “save the world one puppy at a time” as a veterinarian, instead decided to pursue a career in medicine when her grandmother was diagnosed with lung cancer.

“She had never smoked a cigarette in her life,” said Dr. Couvreur. “That’s what made me want to go into medicine, to understand the science behind how our bodies work, why they do what they do.”

But it was sitting next to a new mother with a new baby at a hockey game near her home in Michigan that led Dr. Couvreur to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology.

“She was so happy,” Dr. Couvreur said. “And I asked her where she delivered, and it was my hospital where I was doing my training. She just couldn’t say enough about her doctor and the staff there. I realized that I wanted that – to go to a community hospital and get to be a part of such a happy experience, every day. That’s what attracted me to come to Tanner – it has the community feel that I’m used to, but it doesn’t compromise on amenities and service.”

With Carrollton Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Couvreur said she’s excited to join a practice that serves generations of area residents.

“We see grandmothers, mothers and daughters,” said Dr. Couvreur. “So we get to know entire families and be there when those families grow, welcoming new babies.”

Dr. Couvreur earned her medical degree from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in East Lansing, Mich., and completed her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology with Mercy Health Partners in Muskegon, Mich.
