What is a hospitalist?
A hospitalist is a physician who cares for patients while they are in the hospital. Hospitalists do not have outpatient medical practices; they work only in the hospital. Your primary care physician may refer your care to a hospitalist when you are hospitalized. During your hospital stay, a hospitalist will see you instead of your primary care physician. After you have been discharged from the hospital, your primary care physician will once again care for you.
Hospitalists, who are trained in internal medicine, are available to answer your questions and your family’s questions. They also will follow up on your care and any tests and treatments that may be necessary during your stay.
When you are discharged, the hospitalist will work closely with your primary care physician to discuss further treatment needs, prescribe medications, arrange follow-up visits and update your medical records. Working together, hospitalists and your primary care physician will improve the quality and efficiency of your inpatient and outpatient care at Tanner.
