Don’t confine yourself to traditional MRI

A sure diagnosis is necessary for effective treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans are one of the most useful tools physicians have to confidently diagnose a wide range of health conditions. With the Philips Panorama High Field Open MR system at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton, you have an Open MRI option, providing an almost 360-degree opening that relieves the sense of confinement often found with traditional MRI systems.

With Tanner’s Open MRI system, your scan experience should prove perfectly comfortable, and even relaxing.

Is MRI right for me?

MRI scans are not right for everyone. Inform your referring physician or the technologist conducting the MRI scan if:

  • You have a pacemaker.
  • You have aneurysm clips in the brain.
  • You have a shunt with a telesensor.
  • You have inner ear implants.
  • You have metal fragments in one or both eyes.
  • You have implanted spinal cord stimulators.
  • You have implanted active devices.
  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

Q&A about your MRI scan.

Why are MRI scans important?
MRI scans allow physicians to see images of a patient’s internal organs and structures in great detail and from many angles. This provides physicians with information more quickly, and often more economically, than past tests and invasive exploratory surgeries.

How long will the scan take?
The duration of the MRI scan will usually be between 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the part of the body being studied. You should allow extra time in case the exam lasts longer than expected.

Does the machine make a lot of noise?
The magnet makes a slight rapping sound as images are taken. In between scans, the machine is quiet. The MRI technologist will provide you with hearing protection prior to the scan, but the ear protection will not prevent you from hearing the technologist if he or she needs to speak with you during the exam.

Will I be alone during the scan?
You will be in contact with an MRI technologist at all times while undergoing the scan. Even when the technologist is not in the MRI room, you will be able to communicate with him or her through an intercom. In some instances, a family member is welcome to stay in the room with you during your scan.
