The knowledge you need
Tanner Specialty Center for Diabetes and Hypertension is designed for people of any age, as well as their families and caregivers. Our mission is to empower those with diabetes and/or hypertension with the knowledge needed to manage their disease and enable them to make informed choices in their daily lives.
What is diabetes?
People with diabetes either can’t use or make enough insulin to move the glucose from the blood into the cells. When you have diabetes, sugar builds up in the blood instead of going into the cells. Since cells aren’t getting enough fuel, you may feel very thirsty or tired. Diabetes is a lifelong disease. With diabetes, you need to learn to balance food, exercise and often use medication to control your diabetes and avoid complications such as vision problems, kidney disease, heart disease, strokes, poor circulation, high blood pressure, nerve damage and foot problems. Some people have no symptoms of diabetes, while others often experience one or more of the following:
- extreme thirst or hunger
- frequent urination
- sudden, unexplained weight loss
- slow healing cuts and sores
- increased fatigue or decreased energy
- irritability.
Can diabetes be prevented?
The term “prediabetes” refers to a condition when a fasting blood glucose test is not high enough to be diabetes, but is above the normal range and puts you at risk for developing diabetes. Screenings should be considered at three-year intervals beginning at age 45. Testing should be considered at a younger age or be carried out more frequently in individuals who have one or more of the risk factors:
- first-degree relative with diabetes
- ethnicity other than Caucasian
- hypertension
- high cholesterol
- excess weight
- history of gestational diabetes or baby over nine pounds
- habitual physical inactivity.
If you make lifestyle changes now, you may help stop or delay the progression of prediabetes to diabetes:
- Increase your activity level. Exercise!
- Lose weight. Even losing seven percent of your body weight can reduce your risks!
- Eat the right foods in the right portions. Choose vegetables and fruits, eat fish and poultry more often, trim visible fat from meats, drink reduced fat milk, increase fiber, decrease saturated fats - use olive or canola oils - and limit portions.

What is hypertension?
Hypertension is another word for high blood pressure. Many different factors can increase blood pressure, including obesity, high salt intake, aging and sedentary lifestyle, stress and resistance to insulin. Most people with high blood pressure have no symptoms. They only find out they have high blood pressure during a routine exam for some other problem. Most treatments for high blood pressure rely on some combination of diet, exercise and medication.
