People who are self-disciplined and conscientious in their life are less likely to develop Alzheimer's disease, researchers say. In a report published in 2007 in the Archives of General Psychiatry, researchers followed members of a religious order for 12 years and found that conscientiousness ranked at the top of traits that reduced the risk for Alzheimer's. Although this study and others have shown an association between certain modifiable lifestyle factors and a reduced risk for Alzheimer’s disease, the National Institutes of Health says that researchers still aren’t sure whether these factors can actually prevent the disease.
