Free and confidential mental health and substance abuse screenings are available to individuals of all ages. Screenings can be scheduled in any of Willowbrooke at Tanner’s offices in Carrollton, Villa Rica or Newnan, Monday through Friday. For patients in crisis, screenings are available in any of the Tanner Health System emergency departments, 24 hours a day. In some cases, your screening could be conducted over the phone with a Willowbrooke at Tanner crisis counselor who may make recommendations for immediate treatment.

A mental health clinician will work with you and/or your family to determine the treatment that is right for you, either through Willowbrooke at Tanner or in coordination with other qualified community services. Tanner offers an extensive list of community services for referral, all approved to meet organizational performance and quality standards, in addition to our own extensive list of programs and treatment options. Willowbrooke at Tanner will help you decide the best referral for your unique needs, as well as verify your insurance benefits for you (if applicable) and make sure that the recommended treatment is covered by your plan.

All individuals must complete a mental health and substance abuse screening before being admitted to any Willowbrooke at Tanner program. The purpose of the screening is to make sure that you are referred to the correct treatment program and level of care for your individualized need.

Assessments and Evaluations

Willowbrooke at Tanner offers comprehensive mental health and substance abuse evaluations. Most assessments and evaluations are scheduled appointments that follow a free mental health and substance abuse screening.

Assessments and evaluations consist of a more intensive clinical interview than a screening and may also include testing. At the conclusion of an assessment or evaluation, the patient will receive recommendations for specific treatments or programs, individualized treatment plan recommendations and clinical diagnosis.

Master’s-level clinicians and specially-trained substance abuse evaluators are on staff to provide this service to individuals of all ages. Assessments and evaluations are usually the first step in any treatment program.

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

Partial hospitalization is a treatment bridge between inpatient and outpatient care. Available at both Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica and Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton, the Partial Hospitalization Program is designed for two types of patients: those who maintain themselves in the community at a minimum-to-moderate level of functioning and present no imminent harm to themselves or others, and those who are making the transition from inpatient care back into the community. There are two PHP programs: one for adults (18 and up) and one for children and adolescents aged 5-to-17-years. (See list below for PHP programs)

The hours for PHP are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday for adults with a behavioral health diagnosis or a behavioral health diagnosis with chemical dependency issues. During the regular school year, the Child and Adolescent Program's hours are 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. During the summer months, the program hours are adjusted to 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Transportation and meals are provided to patients in all partial hospitalization programs.

Tanner Partial Hospitalization Programs

Child and Adolescent PHP
The Child and Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program specializes in treating children ages 5 through 17 with behavioral problems, emotional issues, and/or substance abuse problems that require more intensive treatment than outpatient counseling.

Smiling boy in red hoodie

Our counselors and staff educate family members on patient’s treatment goals and needs. Tanner Behavioral Health has a family therapist dedicated to working with the child or adolescent’s family weekly. This program is available at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton and Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica, and typically lasts from two-to-four weeks depending on the progress of the patient.

Adolescent Substance Abuse Partial Hospitalization Program
This partial hospitalization program is part of the Willowbrooke at Tanner Child and Adolescent program, but is an intensive program specifically designed for young people with substance abuse problems.

Adolescents age 13 to 17, males and females, are evaluated on admission to the program through a clinical interview and an addiction questionnaire. The program usually lasts from four to eight weeks, and dinner and transportation are provided. The length and intensity of the program are tailored to each adolescent’s clinical needs. This program is available at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton and Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica.

The family plays a critical role in an adolescent’s recovery. Tanner Behavioral Health asks that the family participate in weekly family therapy and family education groups, and to help their adolescent through a 12-step program for the duration of their treatment at Tanner Behavioral Health and as a part of their after-care plan.

Tanner Intensive Program for Behavioral Change (TIP)
This partial hospitalization program treats adolescent boys (age 12-17) who have offending sexual behaviors. The program offers four hours of treatment per day, Monday through Friday, as well as meals and transportation. Treatment may last from six to eight months depending on the progress of the patient.

The treatment is offered to boys whose inappropriate sexual behaviors allow them to continue living in the community, but are severe enough that weekly treatment in individual or group sessions will not be effective. The youth participates in group, individual and expressive therapy as well as psychological education.

Family therapy is a key component in treating this type of problem. Individual family sessions as well as multi-family groups are provided. A victim prevention specialist helps create safer home environments, educates caregivers, and assists schools in supporting these youth while protecting other children. Polygraph assessments help the teens to be honest and accountable for their behavior, while the program lowers their risk of re-offending.

Adult Behvioral Health and Substance Abuse Partial Hospitalization Program
This partial hospitalization program treats adult patients (18 and older) who require intensive treatment while continuing to live at home. It is for adults who need more support and structure than traditional outpatient treatment can provide, but does not require 24-hour medical supervision.

This program specializes in treating substance abuse and chemical dependency, along with patients who may have a dual-diagnosis of substance abuse and mental illness. Treatment may last from two-to-eight weeks depending on the progress of the patient.

Mental, emotional and substance abuse problems affect the whole family, so it is important that family members become actively involved in the healing process. Tanner Behavioral Health counselors and staff educate family members on the patient’s treatment goals and needs. Just as important, they assist family members in understanding their own feelings.

Equine Therapy

Equine Therapy is a summer program that is part of the Willowbrooke at Tanner Child and Adolescent Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Program and is available to patients and families working with the Tanner Intensive Family Intervention Program. This program introduces the element of working with horses, creating a horse-human connection that is rich with opportunities. This mode of therapy provides a focused interactive learning activity in which the reward is often immediate to the participant, as horses tend to mirror the person with whom they are interacting. Through this experience, patients can gain a better understanding of themselves and their relational skills. This program is offered through collabortion with Rachel’s Wish Foundation and the Possum Snout Arena in Tallapoosa, GA.

Tanner Intensive Family Intervention Program (TIFIP): In-home counseling

The Tanner Intensive Family Intervention Program (TIFIP) focuses on treating children with emotional and behavioral difficulties. The program works to promote a healthy family environment and to prevent the need for placing the child in out-of-home situations, such as inpatient hospitalization, detention, therapeutic foster care or residential treatment.

Girl laying in a field

TIFIP works with children in their family's home to assist the family and child in resolving the current crisis and reducing the likelihood of recurrence, helps the family to connect with needed community services and resources, improve the patient's ability to cope with his or her circumstances, as well as improve the parent's or legal guardian's capacity to care for a child with exceptional circumstances or special needs.

Services are directed towards the child identified to be in need of treatment, but include the whole family. Children and their families receive time-limited, in-home intensive support services in an effort to prevent the need for out-of-home residential treatment. Your child will have three therapists working with him or her and your family at least three times per week. A full-time program coordinator helps facilitate social work and the coordination of services. For those families that require it, the therapy team has access to our medical director, Jack Miller, MD. Dr. Miller is a developmental behavior pediatrician with more than 25 years of experience working with youth and their families.
