Crisis Line: 770.836.9551 and 770.456.3266
A 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week help line confidentially addresses psychiatric and emotional concerns. Staff members trained in crisis intervention may refer clients to the closest Tanner Emergency room for immediate intervention or schedule an assessment.
Assessments
Free physician-supervised assessments are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The assessor determines the level of care required either through Tanner or in coordination with appropriate community services. Referrals given to the individual are within their insurance network of benefits. Individuals who do not have insurance are referred to providers who accept payments on sliding scales based on the individual's financial status.
Individuals must complete an assessment prior to admission to Partial Hospitalization or the Intensive Outpatient programs. Assessments are conducted at any of Tanner Health System's Emergency Rooms, or can be scheduled during normal business hours by calling 770.836.9551 or 770.456.3266.
Inpatient Unit
Located at Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton, the Behavioral Health Unit is a 14-bed acute psychiatric inpatient unit that offers specialized care of adults experiencing severe psychiatric disorders. The patient's hospitalization must be voluntary.
The types of common disorders treated include: major depression, bipolar disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenic and other psychotic disorders, dual diagnosis disorders (primary psychiatric disorder with associated substance abuse), organic mental disorders, chronic pain syndromes and psychosomatic disorders.
The inpatient unit provides a total therapeutic spectrum through individualized treatment programs that include a minimum of five hours of structured activity during each day. Programs for both high and low functioning patients are provided, as well as programs for dual diagnosed patients.
A multidisciplinary team of clinicians led by a physician provides treatment including crisis intervention, comprehensive evaluation and rapid stabilization. The primary function of the behavioral health unit is to provide short-term treatment in the least restrictive environment that can ensure safety and help patients reduce symptoms, improve functioning, refine coping skills and make the transition to a less intensive level of care.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Partial Hospitalization is a treatment bridge between inpatient and outpatient care. Available at both Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica and Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton, the Partial Hospitalization Program is designed for two types of patients: those who maintain themselves in the community at a minimum-to-moderate level of functioning and present no imminent harm to themselves or others, and those who are making the transition from inpatient care back into the community. There are two PHP programs: one for adults (18 and up) and the Child and Adolescent Program for 5- to 17-year-olds.
The hours of operation are 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday for adults with a psychiatric diagnosis or a psychiatric diagnosis with chemical dependency issues. During the regular school year, the Child and Adolescent Program's hours of operation are from 3:30 p.m. –8 p.m. Monday through Friday. During the summer months, the program hours are adjusted to 11:30 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Available through both Tanner Medical Center/Villa Rica and Tanner Medical Center/Carrollton, the Intensive Outpatient Program treats substance abuse problems for those who need assistance in beginning recovery, but who do not require detoxification or other inpatient treatment. The program is offered for individuals ages 18 and up. (Younger patients are assessed on a case-by-case basis.) The hours of operation for the IOP program are 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. for daytime programs, and 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. for the evening program. All programs run Monday through Friday.
Tanner Intensive Program for Behavioral Change (TIP)
This Partial Hospitalization program treats adolescent boys (ages 12-17) who have offending sexual behaviors. The program offers four hours of treatment per day, Monday through Friday, as well as meals and transportation.
The treatment is offered to boys whose inappropriate sexual behaviors allow them to continue living in the community, but are severe enough that weekly treatment in individual or group sessions is not effective. The youth participate in group, individual and expressive therapy as well as psycho-education.
Family therapy is a key component in treating this type of problem, therefore individual family sessions as well as multi-family groups are provided. A victim prevention specialist helps create safer home environments, educates caregivers and assists schools in supporting these youth while protecting other children. Polygraph assessments help the teens to be honest and accountable for their behavior, while the program lowers their risk of re-offending.
